It doesn't occur to anypony that the shell might be empty? I mean, traditionally you hold an empty shell up to your ear to hear the ocean.

That reminds me of that one thing from an old horror movie, I can't for the life of me remember it, where a spike comes out of a telephone and stabs you through the ear.
