Didn't people watch the show? Nightmare moon was sent to the moon, not Luna. Luna was corrupted and was "Jailed" IN the moon. not on the moon.

This is more poignant and dramatic.

Also, Nightmare Moon IS Luna, just Crazy Evil Luna.

It's also important to note that the comics throw a layer of doubt on that prognosis.

She was corrupted, by her emotions, and transformed into nightmare moon. She wasn't both.

Luna literately ceased to exist when Nightmare moon took over.
When the elements of harmony purified her when she returned, its vice versa, Nightmare moon ceased to exist and Luna took over. There is no both. You can't have good and evil at once. You can't have evil descend into good to contemplate what she did wrong. Then transform back to take revenge upon return.

Its things like this that people who do creative writing call continuity. But it also annoys me that people try to say "Celestia threw her sister to the moon, for a just because reason" just to demonize her when like I said, Luna was corrupted and she had no choice and had to lock the corrupted version of luna away.

First off.

Don't. I'm a writer, too. I'd even throw my hat out there and say I'm a damn good one, and what you're presenting here is honestly oversimplified.

Secondly:

How exactly do you figure? If Luna ceased to exist then there wouldn't be anything left of her to purify Nightmare Moon from her. By that logic the Elements of Harmony would have erased Nightmare Moon from existance and left nobody.

Oh, and-

Nobody said that. Believe me, if you go back into my comment history you'll find I spend most of my time either admiring Celestia or defending against the kind of people who do that to her character.

But morality and ethics are fucking complicated. Celestia did what she had to do to keep Equestria safe and she stomped on her own heart to do it, and when it was over she HAD to know that Luna was being punished, too. Because Luna is still there at the core of Nightmare Moon's character. Nightmare Moon couldn't have existed without Luna.

It doesn't make Celestia a bad pony. She did something not a lot of people (yes, people, I'm pretty sure some of US would have trouble with that choice) would be willing to do for the safety of everyone.

But the entire situation was fucked up. Everyone deserved better. And if you go by the logic that Nightmare Moon was an extension of Luna's personality, then honestly nobody was the badguy, not even her.
